Where the Gold Was in Georgia

A Map of Gold Deposits in Georgia

After the Cherokee Indians left Georgia in 1833/1834, numerous gold and silver mines were sought after. The 1832 Gold Lottery included those counties where gold had been discovered. If you are unable to locate your ancestor during this period, you might try searching Cass (renamed Bartow), Cherokee, Cobb, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Murray, Paulding, and Union counties. First, look in the tax returns for those counties. This will list those who drew 202–1/2 acres in the Gold Lottery. Note that your key research is finding the land granted in that lottery, viz; 202–1/2 acres. The tax returns are your best bet, because people are discovered there that were never listed in the census records!
