Pitiful Creatures

The English Trustees sent many poor and useless creatures to the colony of Georgia. Although they interviewed prospects who could best settle in the colony and become an asset, such as silversmiths, brick masons, sawyers (carpenters), candlemakers, farmers, etc., few of them were able to build a proper life for themselves. By the 1740s, the lazy sorts had congregated together in a complaining society which led them to drink and carouse and finally run away to Charleston, South Carolina to avoid responsibility.
